I believe it is primarily important for your own character development in the long run. But never forget that some selfish tendency will keep you from giving all that you have. While altruistic endeavors can be noble, it can also backfire on you. There are people out there who tend to prey on those who like to help others, sad i know. But the trick is tricky, this is what yiu will need to learn.

Learn, who to recieve help from and who not to recieve help from. Thus you must also learn who to help and not to help. Sounds hard? You betcha! But it gets easier as you mature. Its easy to just throw money at it, but it only makes those who really dont need it happy, and therefore didnt really help at all, you just gambled your money away, while someone pulled the wool over your eyes.
